The Art Department’s 2nd Empty Bowls event was a huge success! We had almost 100 people in attendance including students, staff and members of the community. Each quest shared a delicious meal, had the opportunity to win incredible raffle prizes and took home a beautiful handmade bowl created by one of the students at BHS. These “Empty Bowls” will serve as a reminder of the people within the community that do not always have a meal to eat. Through this event, we were able to raise almost $1,200 to be donated to the Berlin Food Pantry and New Britain Food and Resource Center.
Bowl Olympics!
The first ever Bowl Olympics was held to prepare for and promote the Empty Bowls Fundraiser. Students and staff competed in 5 events on the pottery wheels, including Widest, Fastest, Blindfolded, Most Creative and Best Overall. At the end of each event, the bowls were judged and the winners were awarded necklaces with tiny pots as “medals”. Almost 40 bowls were created within 2 hours!
Festival of Trees and Traditions / Hartford Public Library’s Artwalk
Sculpture students participated in the 44th annual Festival of Trees and Traditions at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Using wire, paper and foam board, students created unique ornaments inspired by Abstract Expressionism. Their work was hung on a cardboard tree and displayed at the museum throughout the event.
The Art Department took a field trip to Hartford, CT and saw several special art exhibits. First, students visited the Hartford Public Library where they received a tour of the building’s permanent artworks and the current exhibit at the Artwalk Gallery. Then students visited the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art where they experienced a guided docent tour of the museum and a self-guided tour of the exhibits, including the annual Festival of Trees and Traditions.
